About Westport

Incorporated as an independent municipality in 1904 when it separated from North Crosby Township, Westport is a village in Eastern Ontario, at the west end of Upper Rideau Lake on the navigable Rideau Canal system, 100 km southwest of Ottawa. Part of Leeds County, it's 40 minutes north of Kingston, 20 minutes south of Perth and 30 minutes from Smiths Falls. It's a well-contained village with every convenience for its residents and visitors.

The closest airport is Ottawa's MacDonald Cartier International Airport, 75 minutes away.

Following Ireland's Great Famine, Westport received a number of largely Catholic Irish immigrants between the 1840s and 1860s. Westport remained a thriving centre through the 19th and into the 20th centuries. The building of the Rideau Canal allowed goods to Ottawa and Kingston. R.G. Harvey proposed a railway be built from Brockville to Sault Ste. Marie, but the money ran out after the Brockville-Westport leg had been completed in 1888.

The large number of cheese factories between these two municipalities was behind the train becoming known as "the cheese run". The train was also responsible for transporting tourists to Westport beginning its tradition as a tourist destination.

According to Census 2021, the population is 634, up 7.5% from 2016, and down from 664 in 1991. The mother tongue of its residents is 97% English and 3% French.
