About Richmond
The suburban community of Richmond in the City of Ottawa's south-west, spans the Jock River which feeds into the Rideau River. You'll find it 10 km southwest of Kanata and south of Stittsville. It derives its name from the Duke of Richmond, a newly appointed Governor General of the Canadas. Richmond was selected in 1818 as one of the first military settlements by the British Army. Other settlements included Lanark and Perth. The rising importance of Bytown and the building of the Rideau Canal east of Richmond impacted its ability to thrive after the military relinquished control in 1822.

At Census 2021, the population of Richmond was 4,228, up 4.3% from 2016. The median salary at Census 2020 was $54,400.
Richmond Bakery started in the 1800s and became a mainstay of the area on McBean Street up until its closure 75 years later, in August, 2014 owing to a difficulty in finding experienced bakers.
Of the many historic buildings in Richmond, the St Philip's Church is the oldest Catholic Church in Ottawa.
Schools in the area include: St. Philip Catholic Elementary School, Richmond Public Elementary School, and South Carleton High School.
Richmond residents enjoy sports such as baseball, soccer, curling and ice hockey. For outdoor enthusiasts, the 376 km network of trails named the Rideau Trail runs through the town. The Richmond Centennial Golf Club that opened in 1970 is open 7 days from 7am to 7pm during the golfing season to support golfers of all levels.
Since 1844 the Richmond Fair is held on the 3rd weekend in September to focus on the culture and traditions of the farming community to demonstrate their way of life. There is a wide variety of events including an agricultural exhibition, handmade crafts, live music, horse riding and lots of fun for children.
Residents can travel to Carleton Place, Perth or Smiths Falls via the RR 10, Prescott and Ottawa via Highway 416, or Richmond Road all the way to downtown Ottawa. They can also take an OC Transpo bus to Ottawa.
