About Kars / Osgoode

Kars is a village located on the Rideau River and was formerly known as Wellington Village but was renamed in 1856 to differentiate it from another village named Wellington in Prince Edward County. Due to the small size of the village most residents work in the City of Ottawa.

If you follow the Rideau River, south past Manotick and the Carleton Golf and Yacht Club, you will arrive in Kars, along the longest, uninterrupted section of the river between the Long Island locks in Manotick and Burritts Rapids.

Boat visitors can access the town via a public dock with a general store only steps away. Kars was amalgamated into the City of Ottawa in 2001, about a 30-minute commute to downtown Ottawa where many will travel for work.

With a tranquil feel and rural atmosphere, living here means 19th century homes with narrow tree-lined streets.

Recreation:

  • South of the village you'll find the Rideau Valley Air Park, part of the Rideau Valley Soaring School.
  • W.A. Taylor Conservation Area, Baxter Conservation Area, Rideau River Provincial Park - peaceful places to hike, enjoy a picnic or relax on the beach.
  • Manderley on the Green Golf Course: 27-hole professional course, south off Hwy 416
  • Miller's Farm, Market and Garden Centre - with local, fresh produce, and in the Fall, a pumpkin patch, tractor rides and a wood-fired pizza truck.
  • Stuart Holmes Arena - ice hockey
