About Dunrobin (including all of West Carleton)

Dunrobin is named after Dunrobin Castle, near Inverness, Scotland. It's a community in West Carleton-March Ward about 35 minutes northwest of downtown Ottawa. If you travel west from Ottawa, past Kanata, you'll reach Dunrobin and Dunrobin Shores, eventually ending up at Fitzroy Harbour on the Ottawa River.

Dunrobin's residents are mixed, ranging from farmers, to those who commute to Kanata and Ottawa-Gatineau, and others who own cottages or are permanently retired.

Dunrobin area has a lot of homes on large country lots and there's a newer development around the Dunrobin Lake with nice estate lots. You can also find some smaller cottage-style houses right on the Ottawa River, or just across the Street. Dunrobin has a strip mall now for all your daily needs and a Café and Liquor Store.

West Carleton used to be Forests and Farmland. But now if you're considering living in the Kanata area, you might think about travelling just 5 minutes farther to live in a country setting only minutes to the highway and all services and amenities. You can also enjoy watersports in the summer and skiing, snowshoeing and skating in the winter as the Ottawa River is right there.

Small cottages on the river are slowly turning into large mansions. West Carleton homes for sale here include Huntley Ward, Kinburn, Crown Point and Woodlawn areas, boasting some great waterfront on the Ottawa River. Huntley Ward is a historic township that was established in 1841 and was amalgamated into the new City of Ottawa in 2001. It has a population of under 7000. This area was originally part of the Carleton County of Eastern Ontario.

In September, 2018, Dunrobin experienced an historic EF3 Twister which, according to Environment Canada, was the most powerful tornado in Eastern Ontario since 1902. It was one of six that touched down in the region and it severely damaged over 50 homes and thousands of trees. While there were injuries, there were no fatalities.
